TateCraft - A Minecraft adventure in art and culture

Project Outline

I want to create an interactive Minecraft Map that takes the player on a journey through, into, and around British Art of the last 500 years. Bringing together the best Minecraft map makers working at this moment in the world, I want to design a bespoke experience that the 12+ million players of Minecraft can participate, learn from and enjoy, using the source material of the BP Walk Through British Art as our inspiration. Through developing innovative ways to engage our audience, I want to create unique experiences that combine video game environments and traditional art in surprising and delightful ways that the audience has never imagined could happen. Minecraft offers us the opportunity to bring new audiences of different ages together to enjoy and discover the amazing Tate Britain collection, opening a doorway into art, art history, politics, ideas, messages, puzzles and human scale stories as never before.

Minecraft is a space where it seems anything is possible. Together with other Minecraft makers, we have started to explore the unique ways we could create this world - we want to add custom textures, sounds and audio narrative, so that as well as letting the players view artwork, they will also be able to interact with it in playful and highly engaging ways. For example, walking into a virtual landscape envisaged through the art work, visiting the artists' homes, towns and studios, seeing a painting (or sculpture, print etc...) from different angles, being able to walk around it and begin to solve its puzzles, its inherited ideas and messages and start to develop connections between the artworks and artists in the Tate Britain.

I want to give the audience/player a challenging and rewarding game experience that expands their understanding of British Art and induces delight and enjoyment at the same time. I want this to be accessible to any age, young and older, to those with no formal art training or taught appreciation of art or art history, and to students of art at all levels.

Finally, I want this world to be a place for the audience to be inspired, to be playful, to learn and engage and discover the sparks to light the imagination of a new generation, inviting them to appreciate, create and join in the active practice of art making, viewing and, in doing so, to understand its historical and cultural value.

The Team

A project like this needs many collaborators and in this early planning stage, I have been lucky enough to work with McKupo and FeatherBlade from the VoxelBox. I have followed these two builders on their youtube channels and twitter for many years, alway impressed with their strong design ethos and mind blowing attention to detail.

I have also had the amazing fortune to work with Dragnoz, an excellent map maker/game designer and command block expert, making the impossible happen. He also has an amazing map featured through Mojang's Minecraft Realms subscription that includes seven pre-made maps, from Blocks vs Zombies by SethBling, Spellbound Caves by Vechs and Dash of Doom by Dragnoz.

I have an amazing team set up, from Minecraft artists to cultural researchers to writers, game designers, educationalists, web dev support, as well as enthusiastic volunteers from the Minecraft community, all ready to collaborate to make this vision become reality. Fingers crossed that we win!

Featherblade

featherB

The genius behind some of the VoxelBox's most impressively detailed structures, when Featherblade builds, he builds it bigger. The Citadel, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Aerios, and other truly epic projects are the product of this man's blood, sweat, and mathematical calculation.
